The Sumner High Lady Spartans’ tennis season switches gears today, Wednesday, and Thursday as the team heads to Bally’s in Olympia for the subdistrict tournament, where the top six singles players and doubles teams will advance to the West Central District tournament.

The Spartans closed out the regular South Puget Sound League 3A season with a 4-1 win over Lakes May 5 and a 5-0 win over Clover Park May 3.

Against the Warriors, Emily Gonzales won 6-1, 6-1 and Taylor Henken and Kyla Anderson won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

The big win went to Kally Bieber at No. 2 singles. In her first appearance in singles, Bieber lost the tiebreaker in the first set, won the tiebreaker in the second set, and then won the match tiebreaker to win the match. According to coach Chris Heacox, it was a tiebreaker where the first player to 10 points wins and is played in lieu of the third set.

Gonzalez again easily won 6-3, 6-2 against Lakes. Sumner’s three doubles teams also won with Henken and Anderson leading the way 6-2, 6-2. Skirm and Babcock won their first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-4 and came back for an easy 6-1 win in the third. Bieber and Latta won 6-1, 6-1.
