Paced by four champions and three runners-up, the Enumclaw High girls wrestling team walked away from Foss High’s tournament Saturday with plenty of smiles.
Turnabout was fair play for Enumclaw High Saturday night at the 18-team Spud Walley Invitational in Sedro Woolley as the Hornets found themselves behind defending state 1A champion Orting and Tahoma, 2009’s fourth-place state 4A team, at the end of a long and grueling tournament.

It was a nearly perfect way to start the 2009-10 White River High wrestling season – but not such a great start for Sumner High.
Defending state champion Chantelle Bailey picked up where the Enumclaw High wrestler left off in February, pinning down the 171-pound championship at Saturday’s Emerald Ridge wrestling tournament.
Each year the White River Classic brings together some of the top teams in the state for early-season drama.
What once was called a maintenance and operation levy will now be known as a replacement levy for schools, staff and operations, and the White River School District plans to put its version before voters Feb. 9.
With the largest turnout – close to 60 – in the Enumclaw High wrestling room in years, and many of those returning to the program, coach Lee Reichert is pleased with the first two weeks of practice, but knows it’s a long way to a third straight state championship.
“We’re optimistic,” Reichert said.
“Our goal is to get back on the board again,” White River High wrestling coach Joe Klein said after the 2009 state tournament concluded in February.
Whether Kandie Kujawa returns to the White River High wrestling mat is unclear, but the senior, who finished eighth at 140 pounds at the state tournament in February, should inspire the dozen other Lady Hornets in the wrestling room.
With the graduation of state participants Greg Rufener, Josh Petersen and Pierce Beigh, third-year Enumclaw High boys swim and dive coach Ann Bettencourt says there are some pretty big shoes to fill, but her key returners and a handful of newcomers should pick up the slack – and more.
