History teaches lessons but we haven’t learned

Editor’s note: the following is in response to The Courier-Herald’s March 24 Our Corner column.

Rather than merely extracting sound bites from the Huffington Post, the Daily KOS or ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN, and referring to FOX and Republicans as closet Nazis, you could have used your column space to begin a conversation about what history has to teach us and why we haven’t learned some important lessons from the past.

The Weimar Republic did not build gas chambers in concentration camps to exterminate millions of people. Hitler and his willing accomplices did that. The rise to power of all dictators and despots throughout history is centered on the fact that there will always be depraved, power-hungry narcissists and megalomaniacs who take advantage of the darker side of human nature and circumstances to gain control over others.

Our founders were well aware of the propensity of human nature’s dark side to rise its ugly head at any time. They learned from history that there will always be those who want control over others and will do inhumane and unspeakable things to their fellow humans to gain that power and control. That is why they established a Constitution based on a representative form of government while declaring certain God-given human rights. God can never be abridged by governments of men.

I doubt you understand the underpinnings of the Tea Party movement which is simply people who believe in constitutionally-limited government, fiscal responsibility, free markets and a responsive government to the real needs of the people. These are the principles upon which our country was founded and which are being destroyed as government grants more power to itself.

We have seen an unprecedented overstepping of Constitutional authority by the federal government for the last century but Obama and the Democratic Party are seen as a majority of abusive, life-controlling despots whose real intent is to transform America into a European socialist state where privileges belong to the self-appointed aristocrats and the lowly masses must be controlled by propaganda, lies, bribes, corruption and redistribution of their wealth to the favored classes and groups.

As a believer that people reveal themselves in what they most loudly oppose, you might avail yourself of what the Tea Partiers themselves are saying rather than your obvious reliance on the mouthpieces of liberal speak. You might also want to find a copy of the U.S. Constitution and read what the actual powers of each branch of the federal government really are.

History can teach us some great lessons. Tragically, we haven’t learned many of them.
