Letter to the Editor: I care about you. Trump doesn’t

Reader Morgan Page believes the president sees his constituents as pawns for his own gain.

Politics no longer captures snippets of our identities but has morphed into full personalities, all with a list of stereotypes associated with the political ideology of your choice. These polarizing identities are curated and formed as one attempts to fit themselves into a box where they feel the most accepted. But who built these boxes, and why do we have to conform to them?

Over the past few years, it has become clear that the line we drew in the sand separating ideologies is no longer a shallow pit drawn out by a stick, but has begun to build up into a cement wall. Isolating ourselves and creating personal echo chambers where we rarely discuss issues with people of opposing views.

This type of bickering and arguing, which stems from political polarization, benefits politicians as it not only allows for control but also serves as a distraction. If we are too busy fighting with our neighbors, families, or coworkers, then we won’t have enough time to focus on the larger elements of government that affect all of us.

Now, both sides pander to their voters. However, one side is known for its loyalty, and that is Trump supporters. I argue that Trump does not genuinely care about his supporters. They serve as pawns to his larger game and distract them from what truly matters. We are living in an unstable time politically, and I worry that through the continued class inequality and Trump’s attempt to gain more control, we will slip and fall into a nation that doesn’t serve the working class.

I do not mean we need to come to a compromise on all of our beliefs and opinions. I am not reaching over the aisle to do that. I am reaching over to grab your hands and pull you out from a side that does not put your best interest at heart. I understand Trump has vilified the left, but he misses one important factor. A true leftist is welcoming, accepting, and open to all. Trump had made the left out to be a group of people who ‘look down’ on those with opposing views. However, I don’t look down when I say this. I maintain eye contact as I state, “Trump does not care about you. I do,” and you may disagree with me, and I don’t blame you. To believe the government has our best interests at heart is comforting and makes sense because we are constantly told they do. However, the truth is that the government serves the interests of the wealthy elites. The working class is at risk right now, and we need to put our differences aside to defend ourselves from influential people who work against the average American. However, Trump instills fear into his supporters and warns against individuals like me.

But where he sees you as a pawn, I see you as a person who can come together and fight for the greater good.
