Letter to the Editor: I support the EPD and Flock ALPRs

Reader and former Enumclaw officer Jon Buss voices his support for automatic license plate readers.

I am writing this letter in regards to the discussion. The city is having about installing license plate reader cameras within the city.

After reading the article in the courier Herald, I would fully support these cameras being installed. I understand the privacy argument that people legitimately have, however, the cameras only take photos of the license plate and nobody in the vehicle will be photographed.

I think the body cameras that Officers are being enforced to aware are a bigger issue with privacy rights. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that roadways are public spaces and there is no expectation of privacy. And, I am guessing that all of us have had our license plates read when we travel off to other cities because other cities already have them installed.

I think these cameras can be very useful in solving crimes that occur inside and outside the city. The biggest selling point for me is the amber alert and silver alert aspect of these cameras. Officers getting real time information of a vehicle that is a subject of an amber or silver alert is very beneficial to us all.

I appreciate the work of chief Floyd and his staff for thinking of different ways to fight crime. The police department is a big reasonI feel safe in Enumclaw.
