Letter to the Editor: It should be about character, not color

Reader George Terhaar evokes MLK Jr. in regard to former Harvard president Claudine Gay’s resignation.

“…nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” M. L. King

Former Harvard president Claudine Gay faced congressional allegations regarding her past plagiarism and her unwillingness to confront antisemitism on her campus. As major donors withdrew their financial support and calls for her removal increased, she finally resigned.

Ms. Gay’s parting statement claimed “racism” forced her to leave. Actually it wasn’t.

The liberal DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) plan did her no favors. The push to employ persons of color instead of people of character proved Harvard’s loss of a president. Had she been properly vetted, the hiring committee’s investigation would have discovered the plagiarism problem and antisemitic issues, and Harvard’s troubles wouldn’t have occurred.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s statement rings true today if only we’d listen.
