We must be more empathetic to the homeless

One day, you, too, could find yourself without a home.

I was shocked and disgusted when I finished Ray Miller-Still’s article on the homeless encampment (“Enumclaw cleans up homeless camp,” published March 10).

I couldn’t believe Enumclaw borrowed the Seattle PD’s famously-worthless strategy of busting up homeless camps. All it took was “an average of one phone call a week” and a letter from someone called Susan Rice.

I must applaud Ms. Rice for distinguishing between homeless people and homeless trash. I’m sure it wasn’t easy to humanize people not normally regarded as humans. Too often homeless people are considered nuisances to be dealt with rather than human beings. I urge the city government and the Ms. Rices of the world to develop a shred of empathy, for you may find yourself homeless one day.
