“Zoom bombing” incident not a prank

A letter to Enumclaw Police Chief Tim Floyd.

Dear Enumclaw Police Chief Floyd,

As I read the front page of the Courier-Herald (“Enumclaw PD closes investigation on School District “Zoom bombing”, published Jan. 5), I was taken aback and saddened by your description of the school board “Zoom Bombing” incident as a “prank”. Investigating an incident of this complexity, I understand, can be very difficult and cover many miles, my disappointment is about your pitiful description of this event as merely a “prank”.

This event was a racially motivated action, plain and simple. The fact that you did not describe it as such is an abomination. I would expect that you owe our Superintendent, Dr. Shaun Carey, an apology. He has risen above all this horrid racial discrimination and conducted himself in an ethical and professional manner. Dr. Carey deserves the backing of the Enumclaw Police Department not just by investigating the incident, but by calling the incident what it actually is: racial hatred. Through those “23 raids” you mention raise many questions, I would ask: how did “this group” choose a little town inthe middle of Washington state?; how did they know the day and time the school board was convening?; how did they know the exact time our superintendent would be speaking?; and most importantly, why would this group in Tampa, Florida, and Crawley, West Sussex, U.K., even care? I believe there is more to discover.

Our community is better than this, at least I hope it is. We have a long way to go: accepting people who are not like us, treating people equally and living in peace. The Enumclaw Police Department can play a big part in transitioning our community to an inclusive, peaceful town. I hope you are up to the challenge.
