This week’s editorial cartoon by William Shiers, Jr. takes aim at the Seattle Police Department’s drone program.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn announced Thursday he had ordered Seattle Police to scrap its drone program in light of public opposition. The department had purchased two Draganflyer X6 six-rotor heli-drones through a federal grant. The department had planned to use the remote-controlled short-range drones to provide an overhead view of crime scenes, accidents, disasters and search and rescue operations. Residents critical of the program protested an ordinance being considered by the city council, which would have given the police department authority to use the drones for data collection and barred them from operating the devices over an “open-air assembly of people.”
