“Trails” by local artist Mary Janosik opens at the city of Enumclaw’s Gallery 2010 June 11 and continues through July 6.
Janosik, is a trail-walking, brush-cutting, mountain-climbing champion who carries a camera to capture the beauty she finds. This month, she is sharing her visual experiences with everyone who comes to City Hall to view her show.
An afternoon reception for the artist is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Enumclaw City Hall.
According to Gary LaTurner, Enumclaw cultural programs manager, Janosik’s message to the viewer reads like a travelogue to new and exciting destinations.
“I have lived here my whole life,” Janosik noted in a press release. “My parents raised six of us on the backside of Mt. Peak. We had lots of fun playing in the woods and exploring the countryside, often on horseback. Life was an adventure just outside the backdoor. Occasionally, we would drive up Highway 410 to play in the snow or see wild flowers at Lake Tipsoo. It wasn’t until our own 21-year-old daughter wanted to start hiking, that I thought it would be great to explore the mountains a little farther from home.
“We started hiking seriously in 2001 and couldn’t seem to get enough. It was always an adventure exploring new trails and revisiting old ones in all the seasons. Each trail in this gallery is a day-hike, a mini-adventure, within a 50-mile radius of Enumclaw. We would grab “a mocha” on our way out of town, have lunch at an incredible destination and were back home for dinner.”
In March of 2007, she moved to Colorado. Janosik said she and her husband are hiking, only not as much as she and her daughter. Every trail we hike reminds us nature is a gift to all, she said. “I never tire of the incredible beauty not far from home.”
“I highly recommend experiencing your own surroundings, whether it’s a walk in one of our beautiful state parks close by or a hike in the shadow of our amazing Mount Rainier,” Janosik said. “Take the time to escape to the quiet of the mountains, breathe the fresh air and enjoy awesome sights. In this crazy world there is peace in the simple things, like a walk in the park. It’s not only good for your body, but also good for your soul.”
Artists have been selected by the arts commission for an exhibit at City Hall in Gallery 2010. The year’s schedule includes Sallie Zydek, July; Mike Dilbeck, August; Lisa Parsons, September; Guest Artists, October; Bob Charlo/Kalispel Nation, November; and Payette Still, December.
Gallery 2010 is located in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 1339 Griffin Ave. Hours for the exhibition space are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enumclaw City Hall is closed on national holidays. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays for municipal court proceedings.
