SLIDESHOW: ‘Peter Pan’ ready to take flight at EHS

Like its performance of “Superman,” the Enumclaw High School drama department has been working with Las Vegas’ Flying by Foy to get Peter Pan and friends off the ground for its upcoming performances of the James M. Barrie classic.

“If you’re going to do Peter Pan, you’ve got to fly,” EHS drama teacher Darrell Miller said.

The drama department joins forces with the EHS music departments to present “Peter Pan” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. A second round of performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 25, 26 and 27. The crew will also perform for the Enumclaw School District’s fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Ticket prices are $12, $6 for students.

Miller and his group raised ticket prices $2 to help cover the cost of bringing Foy up from Las Vegas. It cost the drama department $6,000, but Miller said it’s worth it. Flying by Foy is considered the best in the industry. The organization handles all the flying for Broadway like “The Lion King,” “Peter Pan” and “Mary Poppins.”

The cost includes a crew that spends four days installing the flying gear and training the students in the operation of the system. They leave the equipment to be shipped back after the performance.

“If we’re going to do it,” Miller said. “We want to do it right.”

Flying, Miller said, brings magic to the production, not just for the audience, but for the students who get the opportunity to work with professionals.

“It’s a real big deal,” he said.

Not to mention seeing Peter, Wendy, John and Michael fly away to Neverland for the adventure of a lifetime is pretty cool.

Trying to get the students to think past the animated Disney version they grew up with has also been a challenge for Miller.

“Tinkerbell, for example,” he said. “Doesn’t have to be a blonde pixie.”

To help, Miller purchased the book for each student and they discussed it as they read. Miller explained Barrie wrote the play first and it was so popular he followed it up with a book, so there are many differences. In the book, many characters have expanded lives and play bigger roles than in the stage version.

The cast has also ventured to see other plays, not just local productions of “Peter Pan,” but other high school performances to help them gauge their own work.

KeelyAnn Kelly and Kameron Jacobs will split time as Peter Pan. Jeremy McCarthy and Taylor Capallaro will also take turns playing the role of Captain Hook. Josh Olver will play Hook’s sidekick Smee.

Alex Castanza will play Wendy. John is portrayed by Kyle Sharick. Andrew Bass will play Michael. The children’s Nana will be played by Hilario Zarate Jr.

A number of alumni have returned to help with the production either as choreographers, costumers and armor creators.

The EHS instrumental department, under the direction of Lynda Alley, will perform the Mark Charlap music. EHS choir teacher Paul Scott has been working with the vocal cast.
