The week of Jan. 25, tutors and students were treated (for the second year in a row) to an array of scrumptious cupcakes prepared and donated by the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America club from Enumclaw High School. According to Eilene Stevens, the club’s adviser, the club likes to do service projects in Enumclaw to benefit the community they live in. Their reasons for choosing the tutoring program as a beneficiary of their culinary talents went beyond the cupcakes. Stevens wanted the opportunity to introduce her students to the program for two reasons. First, so they could see what services are available to them should they ever need additional academic assistance; and second, to show a way students can perform additional community service by becoming a tutor. Two of the students delivering cupcakes that Tuesday expressed an interest in becoming tutors.

FCCLA has been in existence nationally since 1945 and has about 250,000 members in grades seven through 12.

The numbers:

In January, 72 students visited the Enumclaw center – 11 of these were newly registered. Divided by grade level, we had 23 high school students, 26 middle schoolers and 26 elementary kids.

Breakout of the January tutoring hours (184) by subject is: math, 60 percent; reading, 13 percent; English, 5 percent; writing, 7 percent; history and government, 10 percent; science, 1 percent; Spanish, 3 percent; other, 1 percent.
