‘Advanced corrosion’ closes Green River/Kummer Bridge

The bridge was closed Aug. 4, but it’s expected to open as a single lane today, Aug. 6.

The Green River Bridge between Enumclaw and Black Diamond was recently closed after maintenance crews discovered some corrosion.

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced the closure on Aug. 4.

But today, Aug. 6, WSDOT said that it plans to open the bridge as a single lane down the center, and that traffic will be managed by temporary signals.

According to WSDOT spokesperson RB McKeon, the bridge was closed due to “some advanced corrosion in the hole stringers” in five locations.

The corrosion was first seen in the northbound lane, so the bridge was first reduced to one lane on the other side. But when crews also found corrosion on the southbound side, the whole bridge was closed.

While the bridge is expected to be open to traffic later today, commuters can continue using SE 409th St, and 128th Way SE to get around the closure.

McKeon said WSDOT is now working on a repair plan.

Another bridge in the area, the Carbon River/Fairfax Bridge, was closed by WSDOT on an emergency basis at first because of deterioration of its steel supports. Later inspections discovered additional structural damage, and the bridge is now closed permanently.

McKeon said WSDOT is “optimistic” this will not be the case for the Green River Bridge (also known as the Kummer Bridge).

“They’re different enough situations that we’re not looking at a closure,” she said. “… We’re not trending in that direction at this time.”
