Five Years Ago

Jack Nagel, a key player in the development of the local ski industry, died March 11. 2004. According to family members, Nagel’s death was the result of heart failure while skiing in Idaho.

Buckley Finance Officer Sheila Bazzar recently received the “Professional Finance Officer Award” for the state of Washington by the Washington Finance Officer’s Association. The award enables Bazzar, who applied for it for the first time last year, to put the letters “PFO” after her name.

Enumclaw High School graduate Brian Scalabrine was named the Newcomer of the Year in the Pac-10 following the basketball season. Scalabrine averaged 15 points and six rebounds a game for USC. The Trojans finished 7-11 in the Pac-10 and 15-12 overall. Big wins came over Stanford and the University of Washington.

Anyone who lives in the Enumclaw area has probably had power restored by Jim Hansen. Hansen is retiring after 29 years of keeping the lights on for Puget Sound Energy.

March 22, 1984

Opponents and proponents of the proposed John Henry No. 1 strip mine near Black Diamond will meet at the King County Courthouse at 9 a.m. today to give their arguments for and against a rezone which would allow the project to become operational.

New owners have taken over Enumclaw Lumber and Hardware but they promise that good service will continue as in the past. Dan Patterson and his wife Gayl purchased the hardware store at 1304 Griffin Avenue in January and changes have been taking place ever since. But the store will still serve homeowners and contractors with all the hardware and lumber supplies they need.

Congratulations go to the Enumclaw drafting students whose combined efforts won first place in the state competition held last week end in Bremerton. The students took ten of the 28 ribbons awarded. Rob Misel, Brian Mayers, and Jeff French took first place ribbons. Misel’s drawing was also judged state grand champion. Jon Lander, Dane Stookey, and Jeff Hoiland took second place ribbons and Tom Chess, Ty Rogel, Shawn James and Curt Orlowski took third place ribbons.

March 26, 1959

The Enumclaw School District got a clear “go-ahead” signal on the proposed construction of a new high school building Monday. Superintendent of schools Charles J. Smith and Board of Education member Paul Pugh were told at a meeting in Olympia that clearance has been granted by the office of the State Superintendent for the construction “of buildings suitable for high school use.”

The retirement of R.N. McCullough, District Ranger for the White River District, with head-ranger at Enumclaw, was announced this week by L. O. Barrett, U.S. Forest Supervisor for the Snoqualmie National Forest. McCullough’s retirement will be affective as of March 31.

Seventy-five Years Ago

April 6, 1934

Immediate construction of one of the finest dance halls and meeting houses in this section of the country is the plan of three Krain lodges, K.S.K.J. Lodge No. 32, J.S.K.J. Lodge No. 162 and S.S.P.Z. Lodge No. 29, as announced this week. It will be on the Black Diamond paved highway 2.5 miles north of Enumclaw on five acres and will be of frame construction with a maple dance floor 50 by 80 feet. The committee leading the drive for necessary money will be John Chacata, John Polajnar, Rudolf Petchnik, Frank Mrzlikar, Joe Cinkovich, John Umek, Cyril Ermence and Jack Ramshak.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Osborn, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Janes, Mr. and Mrs. John Dziedzic, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Hallett, Mrs. W. Polley and Mrs. Ida Welty of Wabash attended a surprise party at the Sam Roberts home in Enumclaw for Mrs. Roberts on Sunday evening.

Amid a small gathering of relatives and friends, Miss Anna Holm and Mr. Einer Nielsen were united in marriage at the Holm home last Saturday. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Nielson at the J.P. Nielsen home with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Petterson attending the couple.
