In a labor of love, Carl Thorsett burns the mid-night oil working in his garage and his weekends racing in the world’s fastest sport. A 26-year-old Enumclaw resident, Thorsett burst on the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series circuit in 2004 and one quarter mile at a time, plans to make the sport his new day job.

Dylan Kleist, a sixth grade student at Enumclaw Middle School, has been selected to participate as a People to People sports ambassador to Holland this summer. He will play basketball for an American team representing Enumclaw and the United States. According to his mother, Sandy, Kleist has maintained a 3.975 GPA while competing in baseball and basketball since the first grade.

Business was disrupted, personal calls went to the wrong homes and at least one person had trouble calling 911 last week when phone service in Enumclaw wet on the fritz. Enumclaw callers with an 802 or an 825 prefix often were either met by a dead line or busy signal or a crossed connection Thursday and Friday. Those trying to call Enumclaw also had trouble connecting.

Brent Goegebuer’s yellow 1950 Willys Jeep has an imposing presence to it. Its tires look like something off a front-end loader, and the engine should be under the hood of a race car down at Seattle International Raceway. The editors of the popular Four WHeeler magazine agree. Goegebuer’s Willys was recently named one of the top 10 trucks in the United States by Four Wheeler.

May 2, 1985

Community Memorial Hospital on Wednesday of this week instituted 24-hour a day emergency physician services to provide increased coverage for the community it serves, George Postill, administrator announced. The board of directors together with the hospital and medical staffs were instrumental in obtaining the services of Northwest Emergency Physicians, a Washington-based group which has been providing emergency care in the state since 1977.

Enumclaw Dolphin Swim Team member Karen Maples put in six top performances at the West Seattle Rainbow Meet last week end to take six wins in her age division. Maples, swimming in the 15-16 age division took a first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.7 and also captured a first in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.66. In the 500-yard freestyle she won in a time of 5:38.89.

May 5, 1960

Wesley Borreson, head line coach at the Enumclaw High School, has been named to fill the head coaching job, Superintendent of Schools Charles J. Smith told The Courier-Herald today. Smith stated that Borreson was chosen by action of the Board of Education from a list of sixteen applications for the position. The football coaching job was vacated two weeks ago when Ron Terry, who had led the Hornets for the past two seasons, announced his resignation from the Enumclaw school system to accept the head coach’s slot at Glacier High School in the Highline system.

May 3, 1935

Your Sales Tax Rate and Exempted Items: Articles costing five to 14 cents, charge is one token or one-fifth of a cent; 15 to 24 cents, two tokens; 25 to 34 cents, 3/5 of a cent, etc. The tax is 2 per cent on the dollar. Exempt are; milk and dairy products, raw fruits and vegetables, and unsweetened breads, gasoline for autos and trucks, newspapers.

As the month of June draws near, parities and showers are being given for Miss Bernice Yerxa who will marry Leonard Paulson next month. Mrs. A.G. Loney entertained at a line shower, and Miss Ruth Tell gave a dessert bridge shower.

William Tucker has been selected to head Enumclaw schools for the coming year. Mr. Tucker comes from Richmond Beach.
