Traffic was slowed Thursday afternoon in Buckley when Dorothy, a very tame sow, decided to go for a walk on state Route 410 and side streets. Officers were unsure of what to do but, luckily, Dorthy’s owner came to their immediate rescue.

Shocking the so-called football experts, the White River Hornets polished off a perfect league season Friday night, defeating the Lakes Lancers 33-13 to claim their first Seamount League Pierce Division championship in six years. “Nobody picked us to be No. 1,” coach Kevin McNulty said.

October 27, 1999

King County surprised the city of Enumclaw last week when preliminary budget discussions in Seattle revealed the county’s plan to hand over ownership of the Enumclaw Forward Thrust swimming pool and the Enumclaw Golf Course to the city.

Enumclaw shoppers are saying goodbye to Bag & Save and hello to the blue and gold colors of Quality Foods Corporation, also known as QFC, as it celebrates its grand opening today.

October 25, 1984

Photo: White River High School students got into the spirit of Homecoming last week with dress-up days. Some turned out for pictures on “Revenge of the Nerds” Day. Homecoming festivities ended with a 34-7 football win over Foster High Friday night and the Homecoming dance Saturday.

Jay Decker, a junior at Enumclaw High School, will be installed as an Eagle Scout this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Enumclaw Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of his projects was a red maple tree planted on the playground at Kibler Elementary School. Ryan Bagley made the benches, Greg Chapman cut the asphalt and Enumclaw Landscape donated the soil. The Parent Teacher Association set aside $50 for landscape improvements.

October 29, 1959

Photo: A Near Miss: The tiny hole in the center of the circle indicated by the arrow shows where a bullet from a 30-30 rifle pierced the wall of a bedroom in the living quarters of Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Bogar near the Sales Pavilion west of Enumclaw on Oct. 23. The bullet ripped a bedspread, shattered the footboard of the bed and lodged in a wall only a few feet from where Mrs. Bogar was seated as she watched TV. Two shots were fired from the brush across the road, the second slug striking the ground near the building and lodging in the siding of the bedroom.

McHugh Avenue, the north-end thoroughfare which runs east and west and is the division point between Enumclaw’s northern city limits and King County, is now improved and takes its place with the other surfaced streets of the city. The work was completed last week, according to Phil Scott, supervisor of utilities for the city.

The wettest October Enumclaw has experienced in the last 22 years was the record set last month when 9.58 inches of rainfall was recorded.

Miss Isabelle and Miss Carol Pooley of Wabash attended a Halloween party given by Miss Roseanne Forler in Enumclaw on Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. James Barnes gave a birthday party for her 3-year-old son, Jimmy, on Wednesday afternoon of this week at which time she used Halloween decorations and a birthday cake. Places were set for Roberta Such, Gertrude Ann and Elsa Sonntag, Keith Lingbloom, Jane Podkranic and Jean and Evelyn Barnes.

Sen. Homer T. Home will be the speaker at a big Democratic meeting tomorrow night at the Liberty Theatre.

Several farmers were the victims of Halloween pranksters who tore down their mail boxes or damaged the box. Warning was issued that molesting a mailbox is a criminal offense punishable by law.
