A busy stretch of Enumclaw pavement gets a new identity next week, when Second Street is renamed in honor of a prominent city businessman. Effective Monday, the entire length of the roadway – from Batterby Avenue on the north to state Route 410 – will be known as Garrett Street.

May 31, 2000

A traffic signal at the busy intersection of Mundy Loss Road and state Route 410 is on its way. The city entered into an agreement with the state at its May 23 meeting to install the light, and awarded a contract for construction of the signal.

May 30, 1985

Chinook Pass, state Route 410, was reopened to traffic May 22. Department of Transportation crews punched through heavy snow between the summit and Morse Creek on the east side during the week, clearing lanes for travelers’ enjoyment over Memorial day weekend.

June 2, 1960

A vast snow field, paralleling the Chinook Pass Highway, that was placid and serene one moment and a roaring avalanche the next, temporarily buried six persons and four automobiles last Saturday about noon.

L.F. Kramer, for many years director of personnel and safety for the White River branch of the Weyerhaeuser company, was the honored guest at a banquet given by the safety committees of White River’s plant and woods operations last Friday night. Kramer is retiring in June.

The second annual renewal of the Enumclaw City Tennis Championships will take its proper position June 21 to 30. Participants expected to be on hand are former champs Harvey Pearson, Sonny Gattavara, Mary Wildes, Burnam Fredericksen and Patricia Smith and Stanley Nelson.
