It wasn’t a matter of “if.” It was just a matter of “when.” That moment came Saturday night under the lights at Richmond International Raceway when Enumclaw driver Kasey Kahne held off veteran Tony Stewart on a restart with seven laps remaining in the Chevy American Revolution 400 and cruised to his first NASCAR Nextel Cup career victory in 47 starts.

Ray Locken might have had the best seat in the house – if there was such a thing. The longtime pilot for United Airlines and current Enumclaw resident was the eruption of Mount St. Helens 35,000 feet above the spewing ash May 18, 1980. Locken was in a plane traveling from New Orleans to Seattle when the mountain blew. Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of that monumental event.

The Enumclaw Hornet fastpitch team continued its late-season fun with a 7-6 victory over the Spanaway Lake Sentinels Saturday at the South Puget Sound League Tournament at Russell Road Park in Kent. The victory earned Enumclaw the SPSL’s No. 5-seed into the WEst Central District Tournament.

All your concentration, says Tim Hadfield – a world-class freestyle aerialist – is on where to land your feet and skis. Hadfield, 24, should know. The EHS graduate has been competitive in the sport of freestyle jumping for years. This season, Hadfield was one of four Americans to finish in the top 20 world-wide. Next year, if he continues to hold pace with his personal schedule, he will be one of only 25 aerialists in the world to compete with triple twisting jumps.

The Expert Rifleman Medal, second highest award in American Junior shooting has been won by Allan J. Creschok of 1830 Wilson Ave., Enumclaw, Wash. the National Rifle Association announced today.

The local nine has once again run its winning streak to three straight, the Puyallup Vikings being the victims of a 5 to 1 defeat.

May 17, 1935

The Northwest strike of Timberworkers and Sawmill Workers Union finally broke in the local lumber industry on Monday when members here decided to walk out. Posting pickers at the mill at Camp Ellenson, the union members stopped all cars from going into and from the mills. The company immediately shut all operations until further notice.
