King County authorities were working early this week to determine what happened Saturday at a rural Enumclaw home prior to a 16-year-old girl being driven to the local hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Early details, provided in a press release issued by the King County Sheriff’s Department, reveal only that the girl was shot while at a home in the 33900 block of Southeast Green River Headworks Road. The address is northeast of Enumclaw, off Veazie-Cumberland Road.

Saturday’s events began to unfold when the girl’s mother called 911, reporting her daughter was at the rural home with her 25-year-old boyfriend. County deputies went to the residence but were denied permission to enter, according to the press release. Deputies interviewed three men at the house, including the one identified as the girl’s boyfriend, but all said she wasn’t there.

One of the two men who drove the girl to the hospital was the boyfriend. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Enumclaw Regional Hospital at approximately 8:20 p.m.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit are investigating, including the possibility that this was an accidental shooting. The weapon was a handgun.

As of Monday morning, there had been no arrests and the investigation was continuing.

The girl was reported as a runaway to the Enumclaw Police Department Oct. 19.
