The water in Lake Tapps has finally reached the minimum recreation level, which means the Allan Yorke Park boat launch will begin charging to drop a boat into the water.
The City Council approved a two-lane, automated bollard system and fee structure for launching boats this year, which is ready for lift off.
The fee for non-residents is $17 or $8.50 each way, which must be paid at a kiosk with a debit or credit card. The fee for non-residents last year was $12.
Residents can purchase a card at City Hall for $25, which allows unlimited launches for one boat for the season.
The boat launch will unveil the automated bollard system this week. The vertical poles rise and lower, allowing boats to launch or return after payment.
The system was scheduled to go into effect by Memorial Day, but the lake was not near recreational level until around the Fourth of July.
The city allowed boaters to launch at their own risk until this week.
“We're putting a sign in by the kiosk explaining what to do,” Community Services Director Gary Leaf said.
Leaf said the city will also install a fourth floating dock next to the boat launch. The Moriarty property across the street from the park will be opened for overflow parking.
The city planned on turning the bollard system on Saturday, but due to a sensor malfunction it was shut down.
Mayor Neil Johnson said the system will be kicked into service this week after technicians check out the electronics.
