Bonney Lake to appeal inclusion in flood control district

The Bonney Lake city council Tuesday night voted to appeal their inclusion in the Pierce County Flood Control District.

The decision came after an executive session called to discuss potential litigation during the council workshop meeting.

Following the session, the council returned and placed on the agenda an action item regarding the motion to appeal the boundary review board’s ruling regarding the flood control district.

“I just think the flood district is completely wrong,” Mayor Neil Johnson said during a brief discussion.

There was no disagreement from the council, which then unanimously passed the motion to appeal the decision.

The Flood control district comprises the entire county, but earlier this year, members of the administration and city council attempted to have their city removed because of its location on a plateau.

Though the council acknowledged that flooding in the valley could affect the entire county, it was felt that including Bonney Lake as a fully-taxed member of the district was unnecessary and unfair because the majority of the benefit of the flood district would go to valley cities.
