Bonney Lake’s southern annexation vote officially delayed

Residents of the annexation area south of Bonney Lake now officially have to wait a little longer to have their say on whether they become part of the city to their north.

The City Council passed a resolution Feb. 22 officially amending its original annexation ordinance to reflect that a vote on the annexation is no longer possible by May of this year.

The original resolution, passed in August, included a timeline calling for a vote in either February or May with the intent of bringing the area into the city Jan. 1 2012.

But the city has run into complications because the county invoked jurisdiction over the area, meaning a hearing in front of the Boundary Review Board is necessary before the annexation is approved.

“Due to the delays in processing the City’s Notice of Intent and setting a public hearing, it is no longer possible to meet the 2011 election schedule as intended by (the original resolution),” reads the summary on the agenda bill.

The Boundary Review Board hearing has been set for Tuesday in Tacoma.

Under last week’s resolution, the special election on annexation is now anticipated between August 2011 and April 2012 with an effective date of 2013, if approved by voters.
