The city of Bonney Lake has decided to buy a used car - an armored car for $93,000 - but the good news is it won't cost the good guys a cent.

The City Council approved the purchase of an armored car to replace the current one used by the Metro SWAT team, which Bonney Lake is a member with other area cities.

Police Chief Mike Mitchell informed the council the car would not cost the city anything since the payment will come from money seized during drug raids.

The armored car the SWAT team is currently using is 30 years old and, according to Mitchell, the car will not stop a rifle bullet. It also is broken down and repairs would cost about $8,400.

“This is the No.1 need for the SWAT team in the area,” Mitchell said.

As part of the Metro SWAT team, the city contributes finances and equipment. City Administrator Don Morrison said the armored car is “Bonney Lake's contribution to the Metro SWAT team. When you look at the broader picture, it makes more sense.”

The armored car the city is planning to purchase is a 2005 model with 4,200 miles on it. A new car would cost about $250,000.

The old car does not have seats and was not designed to carry personnel. The new one is built on a Ford truck frame. The company will paint the car and add a logo, according to the city's specifications.

The council approved the ordinance with six voting yes and Councilman David Bowen abstaining.
