Someone visiting Sumner may only need to walk down Main Street once to discover the town’s Norman Rockwellian charm.

Events like the Daffodil Parade, Sweetheart Wine Walk and the Classy Chassis Car Show provide a welcoming community atmosphere and picture-perfect sights.

These are some of the attributes town officials are hoping people will remember as the public votes on the “Best Tiny Town” in “Evening Magazine”’s annual Best of Western Washington competition.

Sumner Downtown Association Director Shelly Schlumpf said news of the nomination came as a welcome surprise to her and the city’s communications director, Carmen Palmer.

“We want to thank whoever did that,” Schlumpf said.

Schlumpf joked people may think it’s her job to say great things about Sumner, but there’s no denying the sense of Americana the town has.

“I think we exemplify tiny towns in America. I think we are a shining example of that,” she said.

For Schlumpf, Sumner conjures images of towns like Mayberry, from “The Andy Griffith Show,” and the neighborly attitude shows in the town’s shops, where she said people can find the best shopkeepers in the world.

“They get that people like to be treated in a friendly manner,” Schlumpf said.

The public is welcome to post comments about Sumner through a link on the city’s Web site, www.ci-sumner.wa.us and can place their vote for Sumner through Monday.
