The city of Enumclaw’s belated Christmas present was two clean state audits.

The pair of reports, issued Dec. 31 by the state auditor, were accountability and financial statement reports.

The audits were for the year 2011, as state audits are always one year behind current year when the audit is conducted.

Enumclaw City Administrator Mike Thomas said  by email, “The clean audit is of course good news for the city and is a reflection that city staff is doing a good job stewarding the public’s money.”

The 2010 audit concerning the police department found, “The City of Enumclaw Police Department does not have adequate controls to safeguard property and funds held in its custody.”

The 2011 audit stated, “We performed a review of all issues reported in the prior audit finding. We determined the Department has worked diligently to update their evidence processes and handling.”

The reported noted the department “assigned employees to oversee evidence process and record keeping.”

In the 2010 the audit report found one officer was performing all property room duties without oversight by management. The report also stated investigative funds did not have adequate controls.

The current audit of the department procedures stated, “We conclude the issues reporting in the prior audit finding have been resolved.”

Mayor Liz Reynolds said by email Monday, “It gives me great pleasure as a mayor and a taxpayer to know the city received a clean audit because it is extremely important for a government agency… to show their constituency/taxpayers that we have controls and policies in place, that are executed on a daily basis that ensure good stewardship of public funds.”
