City of Sumner vacates part of street

Sumner City Council adopted an ordinance April 20 which will vacate a portion of 145th Avenue East adjacent to the White River, but access to the river will be minimally affected, according to the city.

Robert Price, on behalf of SP II, and Ernest Spada, requested the city vacate the portion of land. The land at 145th Avenue East supports the shorelines of the White River and in order to be vacated the city needed to determine whether the criteria for the vacation of property supporting bodies of water were met, and the city determined they were.

A staff report showed the street vacation does not prevent the public from accessing the shorelines of the White River because people can access it via other locations.

Sumner City Administrator John Doan said one of the criteria for vacating the property is the city of Sumner receiving something in place of the parcel of land. The applicant for the land agreed, “to dedicate and construct the continuation of the Shop Loops trail segment that will provide both greater and enhanced access to the White River,” according to city documents.

Doan said the land being vacated is not used by the city anymore and the applicant plans to use the land for development with two adjacent land parcels, according to city documents.

The Shop Loops trail is an ongoing trail project and recently went to bid for construction.
