Court changes in Sumner | Sumner Mayor Update

Recently, the City of Sumner contracted with the City of Bonney Lake to provide our court services into the future. Within the next few months, Sumner cases will transition to Bonney Lake. Why the change? The City of Sumner's mission is to provide you with needed and valued services that promote our sense of community.

The following is written by Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow:

Recently, the City of Sumner contracted with the City of Bonney Lake to provide our court services into the future. Within the next few months, Sumner cases will transition to Bonney Lake. Why the change? The City of Sumner’s mission is to provide you with needed and valued services that promote our sense of community. Demand for which services are needed and valued changes over time, and we must change with that.

It is also important that we continually look for efficiencies and ask ourselves if there are ways we can provide the better or same level of service for less or the same cost. As mayor, it is my job to make sure your tax dollars are spent wisely and effectively.  Years ago when looking at fire service, dispatch, sewer treatment and animal control, partnering with neighbors made sense. How we provide court services is something we studied when I first became mayor, but at that time, it made more sense to keep that service here.

Things have changed since then. After careful study and considering alternatives, we have decided partnering once again makes sense. Bonney Lake has an excellent court staff that will do a great job in providing this valuable service to our community at the same time keeping costs down for our citizens.

I really want to thank Judge Tim Jenkins, Court Administrator Cathy Pashon and all the past judges and staff who have provided Sumner with excellent service over the years. While the verdict may have changed as to the best way to provide this service into the future, it does not and never will erase a proud past of court services provided in Sumner.
