Twelve Enumclaw and White River high school students were among the top finishers at the DECA Area 5 Conference Jan. 12. Each will move on to compete at the DECA State Career Development Conference March 4-6 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Wash.

The Area 5 competition included students from 14 high schools.

White River scored two first-place finishes at the area competition. Jacob Klein and Frannie Nunn placed first in buying and merchandising competition, while Jaron Cramer placed first in technical sales. Fellow classmate Blake O’Connor place second in technical sales.

Trevor Lykstad and Ryan Roulier earned third-place finishes in the travel and tourism category, while Jessica Tidwell and Alex Chmiel were seventh in hotel and lodging management and technical sales, respectively.

For Enumclaw, Kamille Bergquist and Kira Trojcak were second-place finishers with their 11-page advertising campaign manual. Hornet classmate Erin McCrillis also was a second-place finisher with an 11-page entrepreneurship business plan. Bailey Bazzar finished sixth with an 11-page advertising campaign manual.

Bergquist and Trojcak explained the detail and depth each student puts into their project. The pair created an advertising campaign manual for the Enumclaw Expo Center, targeting a younger audience with an emphasis on the equestrian theme.

McCrillis created a business plan for a podiatry office she would hope to open. The plan included a location, target market, financial plan and other steps involved in starting her own practice.

Bazzar created an advertising plan of Enumclaw clothing business Over The Edge.

According to EHS adviser Carol Jackson, each plan also included the creation of a Web site, a visual display and involved a 20-minute presentation to someone from the business community.

White River adviser Randy Wilson said his school also had a number of students who earned honorable mention. They are Amedeo Gallucci, Hayden Speyer, Ashlie Franklin, Ashley Przywarty, Brendy Fountain, Austin Langford, Keenan Sheaffer, Jonah Athey, Elaina Straus, Alex Shackles, Alexandria BoyleFrye, Spencer Tabery, Iwalani Kauhi, Doug Mays and Hunter Chadwick.
