Delays possible during cleanup on Crystal Mountain road

Travelers on Crystal Mountain Boulevard may experience construction delays while crews remove debris and overhanging rock.

Travelers on Crystal Mountain Boulevard may experience construction delays while crews remove debris and overhanging rock. Last week’s rockslide at milepost 1 left overhanging rock that could be dangerous to the traveling public and could damage the roadway, according to geotechnical engineers.

Because the cleanup and removal work is beyond the scope of the road maintenance crews, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities requested emergency approval for a private contractor to do the work. Scarsella Brothers, Inc. were to begin dislodging the overhang and removing the debris Jan. 14.

Removal should be completed by the weekend.

The safety work is expected to cost $27,000. County road crews will help keep costs down by providing traffic control, hauling materials, protecting the pavement, and making any repairs needed to the roadway.
