One day after raising his right hand and taking the oath of office, new Pierce County Councilmember Derek Young says he’s humbled and excited to serve his constituents in the 7th Council District.

At the first council meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, Jan. 6, Young accepted congratulations from his fellow council members and noted that he was eager to dive deeper into County issues.

“I’ve been in public service for most of my adult life, so I’m no stranger to some of the issues we take on in county government,” Young said. “I’m a proponent of open government and transparency, a staunch public safety advocate and a voice for responsible budgeting. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the coming years.”

Young previously served four terms on the Gig Harbor City Council, which included stints with the Pierce County Regional Council, Puget Sound Regional Council and the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners. He can be contacted at his office in the County-City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave. S, Room 1046, Tacoma, WA 98402-2176, by phone at (253) 798-6654 or via e-mail at derek.young@co.pierce.wa.us.
