A Dieringer teacher was placed on administrative leave last week following an allegation of sexual misconduct made by a former student.

Dieringer School District Superintendent Judy Neumeier-Martinson explained this is proper procedure in these circumstances.

"We prefer to err on the side of caution," she said.

The accusation, she said, occurred a long time in the past. "We are talking to anyone who has information, but it will take awhile to do a thorough and appropriate job."

A staff investigator is looking into the matter. In the meantime, the North Tapps Middle School teacher will remain on leave.

The school district did not release the name of the teacher.

Typically, schools are required by law to report allegations against teachers. However, since the person making the accusation is not a current student, it is up to the individual to file a complaint. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, no charges have been filed.

"It caught us way out of the blue," Neumeier-Martinson said.
