The Sumner School District’s STEM Fair, “Building STEAM!” is set for Saturday at Lakeridge Middle School. The 2013 fair is a rebranding of the district’s annual science fair to better reflect the full contributions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to children’s education.

Student science projects will be on display for exhibition and judging to qualify for regional competition in March. The district will concurrently display projects from left-brained classes, clubs and partner organizations. Camp Invention, the LEGO League robotics club, Project Lead the Way and Daffodil Valley Elementary will demonstrate their work. Other exhibits will be run by the Boeing Geology Club, Cascade Regional Blood Services, Chess Table, Pierce County Environmental Educators, the Tacoma Astronomical Society and Washington State University’s Master Gardeners, as well as others.

For young children — ages eight months to eight years — their will be open block play to demonstrate concepts of math and science.

Nationally recognized educator Rick Hartman will host a 45-minute comedic presentation demonstrating mathematical principles with toys. “The Toy That Math Built” is sponsored by the Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation and will begin at noon on the Commons Stage.

The fourth annual district art show, hosted by the Fine Arts department with support from the City of Sumner Arts Commission, will exhibit in conjunction with the fair. The show will include its regular repertoire of drawings and paintings in watercolor, oil, charcoal, colored pencil, mixed media and ceramics, and has added a category for digital photographs submitted by middle and high school students. Visitors can cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award, and art store Ben Franklin will host a hands-on work table.

Mountain View Middle School student Stacey Randolph was this year’s winner of the STEM Fair poster contest. Every entry in the STEM Fair’s poster contest will be on display.

The fair and art show will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lakeridge Middle School is located on 5909 Myers Rd. E. in Bonney Lake.
