Don’t forget to vote on Nov. 2

After months of campaigning, it’s finally time to stop hearing from the candidates and start hearing from the voters.

Election Day is Tuesday, meaning all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by the end of the day or deposited in one of the 20 ballot drop sites set up but the Auditor’s office. Ballot drop boxes lock at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Pierce County is also the last county in Washington to offer polling place elections. The county will open 56 polling places on Tuesday.

The ballot includes nine statewide measures and candidates for U.S. Congress, the state Legislature, County Auditor, County Prosecutor and County Council districts 1, 5 and 7.

Locally, voters must also select representation for the 31st Legislative District.

In the House, incumbent and “Independent Democrat” Chris Hurst is running against Republican Patrick Reed of Sumner.

For the other open state House of representatives seat, voters have a choice between two-term County Councilman Shawn Bunney and Enumclaw School Board member Cathy Dahlquist, both Republicans.

It is the district’s Senate race, however, that has been causing the biggest uproar. In that race, incumbent Pam Roach is squaring off against Sumner City Councilman Matt Richardson, also both Republicans.

In the race to replace Bunney on the county council, former state representative Dan Roach (R-Bonney Lake) faces off against firefighter Pat McElligott (D-Tacoma).
