DONUTS AND DECEPTION: Police were called to Bonney Lake Elementary School just after midnight Oct. 23 for a report of a vehicle doing doughnuts on the school’s playing field. The reporting party saw and heard the suspect vehicle on the field and used his vehicle to block the hole in the construction fence the suspect vehicle had gone through as he called the police. While the reporting party was waiting for the police, occupants of the suspect vehicle yelled that they wanted to leave and the reporting party told them he was waiting for the police, at which time the suspect vehicle drove toward the reporting party at a high rate of speed. The reporting party started to back up to avoid a collision and then closed his eyes fearing an impact. The vehicle narrowly missed the reporting party, but hit a street sign on his way out, which then fell onto the reporting party’s vehicle, causing damage. The reporting party provided a license plate and description of the occupants to police. Police visited the home of the vehicle’s registered owner, but the vehicle was not there. Three hours later, police returned to the address and the vehicle “covered in fresh mud and debris” but no signs of hitting a street sign. When police contacted the driver, he appeared intoxicated and matched the description provided by the reporting party. The suspect told police he and his vehicle had been home all night. The officer told the suspect he knew that was not true because he had been by the house earlier and the vehicle was not there. The suspect continued to make false statements and was placed under arrest, at which time he changed his story and said he was not driving at the time of the incident and then said the person blocking the fence flashed them with lights, placing himself at the scene and making him equally at fault for the damages. The suspect then “decided to cooperate” and said a friend was driving the car because he was intoxicated. Police forwarded the case to prosecutors and recommended charges of criminal trespass, malicious mischief and aiding an abetting a hit-and-run collision. Police are recommending the other suspect be charged with reckless driving, criminal trespass, malicious mischief and hit-and-run collision.
