Drunk driver hits pole, backs up, hits it again

Police in Bonney Lake arrested a man who rammed his car into a concrete parking pole at WalMart and then backed up and did it a second time.

The driver was cited for driving under the influence, reckless driving and hit and run and transported to Buckley Jail.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to Walmart at 6:55 a.m. March 6 after a pair of witnessed watched the vehicle hit the same pole twice and then leave the scene, headed east on state Route 410.

Officers caught up with the suspect vehicle at Centennial Storage in Eastown. The driver was out of the car and standing, barefoot, next to the vehicle and raised his arms as if giving up when police approached.

Police could see a large amount of steam rising from the hood of the vehicle and a second male standing near the back.

As the officer approached and asked what was going on, the driver approached with his hands raised and said “It’s all me, I was driving and I am drunk.”

The driver then admitted to ramming the pole, but declined to take field sobriety tests.

“Let’s just skip to the part where I blow into the machine. It’s easier that way,” he told police.

A second officer contacted the passengers in the vehicle, a male and female, to ask about the incident. Both passengers were also intoxicated.

According to the passengers, they were living in the car. The female passenger told police she was dating the driver, but he suspected she was sleeping with the other passenger, which she denied.

But the female passenger confirmed that in anger the driver drove the car into the pole, backed up and then rammed it second time.

The driver was arrested and transported to Buckley Jail. Police asked him a series of questions and during the interview, the driver told police he was homeless and admitted to drinking.

When asked the time of his last drink and if it affected his driving ability he responded “I was still drinking when I stopped, I have been drunk for a month straight.”

He told police that he hit the post in the parking lot and when the passenger told him he was drunk and did not hit it very hard, he backed up and hit the post faster. He also told police they were saving his life and asked to be booked into jail.

The other two passengers were released at the scene with their possessions.
