East Pierce Fire and Rescue working on potential flood areas

The East Pierce Fire and Rescue district is currently experiencing flooding in two areas.

Update: According to Pierce County, all previously closed roads in our district are now open, although they recommend using caution when driving on South Prairie Carbon River Road East.

The East Pierce Fire and Rescue district is currently experiencing flooding in two areas. Roads are closed at:
  • McCutcheon Road East, near 128th St. E.; and
  • Three sections of South Prairie Carbon River Road East, where it parallels SR 162, south of the town of South Prairie.

Although there is no flooding reported at this time, the city of Sumner has issued a evacuation advisory for the areas around Rainier Manor and those residences of Rivergrove and Riverwalk that are directly adjacent ot the Puyallup River. Residents are asked to be prepared to evacuate, if necessary.

According to the Sumner advisory, earlier reports of larger scale flooding in Sumner were exaggerated. The Wastewater Treatment Facility is not in any danger of flooding at these levels and is working normally, it says.

The city of Sumner has deployed its emergency operations center to monitor the situation. East Pierce Assistant Chief James Jaques, who heads up emergency management operations for the district, is there as part of the team.

According to the National Weather Service, the Puyallup River is predicted to peak tonight.
