East Pierce firefighter union begins coat drive

It’s the beginning of August and a new winter coat is likely the last thing on your mind. While the sun is beaming hot and the weather is still dry, IAFF Local 3520 — the union that represents East Pierce Fire and Rescue — is seeking donations for Operation Warm.

Each donation to Operation Warm will help provide coats to Pierce County children in need. The coats will be acquired from Operation Warm and distributed by East Pierce firefighters in the Sumner School District this fall. They are guaranteed to be American made, a fact that Local 3520 President Mike Westland is proud of, because it helps to ensure jobs stay here in the United States as opposed to being sent overseas, he said.

Coats distributed through the program will be brand new, which fulfills an important need that is often overlooked. A good quality coat will shield children from the elements, but it also provides a higher sense of self-esteem, said Westland. Lack of sufficient winter wear has been shown to deter regular attendance during colder months, he said. The intention is to provide children from lower-income families with a coat they are proud to wear so they stay in school and receive a consistent education.

“This sends a message to the kids that they are valuable and important … having something brand new is a rare treat for many of these kids,” said Westland. “Our firefighters union wants to give back to the community that allows us to serve them.”

Of all the children in Pierce County, 18 percent live in poverty, according to the Operation Warm website. As the community gears up for another back-to-school season, East Pierce firefighters are asking for help providing some of those children with new coats. Every dollar raised will stay local and directly benefit children attending the Sumner School District.

This is the first year Local 3520 has implemented the Operation Warm coat drive. To donate visit the donations page on the Operation Warm website.
