The Secretary of State’s Corporations and Charities Division is offering an educational workshop for new nonprofits on Monday, June 15, in Lacey.

The event is at the Lacey Conference Center (975 Carpenter Road NE) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with lunch provided.

“This workshop is geared toward those who are new to the nonprofit world,” said Teresa Glidden, education coordinator for the Corporations and Charities Division.  “We are partnering with Wayfind Legal to bring their signature “Nuts and Bolts” workshop to Thurston County.  This is exciting to us because until now, this popular workshop has only been available to organizations in King County.  It is presented by attorneys who specialize in nonprofit law and will cover the legal setup of a nonprofit, applying for federal tax-exempt status, as well as nonprofit board governance and a board’s fiduciary duties and responsibilities.

“We will also have presentations on financial controls for nonprofits, when an organization is required to register as a charity in Washington State, and what the law says about using bingo, raffles and other games of chance to fundraise,” Glidden added.

Glidden said space at the facility is limited, so she encourages people to register soon.

There is a $10 per-person lunch charge to help defray some of the costs. Registrants can pay online when they register by credit or debit card. Registration is limited and available online.
