Enumclaw man dies in early-morning crash on SR 169

An Enumclaw man died Tuesday morning, the result of an automobile accident on state Route 169.

An Enumclaw man died the morning of Feb. 23, the result of an automobile accident on state Route 169.

The crash occurred just north of the Krain vicinity at 5:40 a.m.

Nathan G. Menalia, 26, died at the scene, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

According to the WSP, Menalia was traveling north on SR 169, driving a 1994 Mercury Sable. He attempted to pass another vehicle, lost control and crashed into a 2010 Ford Mustang in the southbound lane. The vehicles came to rest blocking both lanes of SR 169, causing early-morning traffic detours.

The driver of the Mustang was identified as Peggy M. Smith, 59, of Sammamish, Wash. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The driver of the third vehicle – a Ford pickup that was being passed – was not injured. He was identified as John B. Gelsvik of Buckley.
