On behalf of Village Tutors, I am excited to announce that Enumclaw Youth and Family Services has taken on the management and development of Village Tutors.
Village Tutors is a nonprofit, community-based program conceived and developed by Walt Bennett and a group of Enumclaw leaders. As you may or may not know, Walt has moved on to pursue new interests, leaving Village Tutors under new management. EYFS is a private, nonprofit child and family resource agency serving Enumclaw and the Plateau since 1980. EYFS has consistently operated major community based programs some of which provide individual and family counseling, case management services, youth substance abuse services, transitional housing, and a youth drop-in center. EYFS’ mission is to assist youth and their families in the Enumclaw and Plateau region by providing counseling and support services with the goal that they will have the opportunity to become healthy, effective, loving and self-directed individuals; Village Tutors is the perfect program to continue this mission.
Village Tutors is designed to support schools and teachers, as well as students. The program is completely community-supported and driven, and focuses on what is taught in the classroom. Under Walt’s development, the tutoring program from the start has been a medium to bring the community to the table with the educational needs of our youth. Village Tutors currently has two locations; one operating out of the Buckley Youth Center and the other out of the former Kids BASE location located behind JJ Smith in Enumclaw. In just over three years, the program provided more than 7,700 hours of free tutoring in subjects ranging from beginning reading to advanced placement calculus. We hope to continue to see the program continue to succeed.
To continue this success, we are reaching out to you, our fellow community members, to become part of our team of tutors. We are looking for anyone with knowledge and passion to share it. We do not require teaching experience or extensive understanding of math or science (although those skills are welcomed). Volunteer tutors go through background checks, receive training, and are asked to make an eight-week commitment to provide consistency in the program and to build relationships with students. We will provide you with the materials and tools you need to be a successful tutor as long as you bring the desire to make a difference in our community. We are excited and proud to demonstrate what small communities can accomplish in support of education and student learning. We’re looking forward to this school year and your continuing support in our program.
