Father’s Day traffic expected to be heavy | WSDOT

Heavy traffic is a sure bet this Father’s Day weekend due to the closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the annual Fremont Fair, and a Mariners homestand.

Heavy traffic is a sure bet this Father’s Day weekend due to the closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the annual Fremont Fair, and a Mariners homestand.

In order for people to make it baseball games and other planned events on time, the Washington State Department of Transportation urges drivers to plan ahead for extra traffic in Seattle and take advantage of our online travel tools.

Saturday and Sunday, drivers can expect volumes on Interstate 5 to begin building in the late morning hours and continue to increase throughout the day. WSDOT has adjusted the Interstate 90 express lanes to accommodate added travel into Seattle.

 

Friday, June 15

  • ·         The Seattle Mariners play San Francisco Giants at Safeco Field at 7:10 p.m. Drivers should plan for heavy traffic on I-5 and I-90 before and after the game.
  • ·         The Alaskan Way Viaduct will close between the West Seattle Bridge and the Battery Street Tunnel from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, June 18. Northbound State Route 99 will close two hours after the Mariners game or at 11:59 p.m., whichever comes first.

 

Saturday, June 16

  • ·         The I-90 express lanes will be open to westbound traffic from 8:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
  • ·         The State Route 520 bridge will open for boat traffic at 9:30 a.m., drivers should plan an alternate route or expect a 30 minute delay.
  • ·         The Fremont Fair will attract thousands to the north end of the Aurora Bridge in Seattle from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
  • ·         The Seattle Mariners play San Francisco Giants at Safeco Field at 7:10 p.m. Drivers should plan for heavy traffic on I-5 and I-90 before and after the game.

 

Sunday, June 17

  • ·         The I-90 express lanes will be open to westbound traffic from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
  • ·         The Fremont Fair will attract thousands to the north end of the Aurora Bridge in Seattle from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • ·         The Seattle Mariners play the San Francisco Giants at Safeco Field at 1:10 p.m. Drivers should plan for heavy traffic on I-5 and I-90 before and after the game.
  • ·         The Seattle Storm play the Minnesota Lynx at KeyArena at 6 p.m.

 

Drivers should also keep in mind boating season is under way and the SR 520 Bridge will open with 1-2 hour prior notice. To avoid delays, drivers can sign up to receive advanced email and text alerts.
