FFA and 4-H students bring in $185,943 at NW Jr. Livestock Auction

While other students are out playing and relaxing, FFA and 4-H students have been working hard to prepare their hogs, steers and sheep for the Northwest Junior Livestock Show, which was held at the Washington State Spring Fair, April 10-16 at the Washington State Fair Events Center in Puyallup.

Puyallup, WA – April 18, 2014 – While other students are out playing and relaxing, FFA and 4-H students have been working hard to prepare their hogs, steers and sheep for the Northwest Junior Livestock Show, which was held at the Washington State Spring Fair, April 10-16 at the Washington State Fair Events Center in Puyallup. They are reaping the benefits of their hard work. The annual Northwest Junior Livestock auction brought in $185,943, nearly $7,000 over last year’s auction total. Sale proceeds are given to the FFA and 4-H participants.

An average price of $2.70 per pound applied to the 18 steers sold. Butcher Boys of Puyallup purchased the 4-H Grand Champion steer owned by Ryan Rogers of Enumclaw. The FFA Grand Champion steer owned by Clay Shelton of Rosalia, WA was purchased by Olson’s Meats of Enumclaw.

A final total of 26 lambs were auctioned, at an average rate of $5.07 per pound. The FFA Grand Champion lamb, owned by Matt Stratton of Sumner, WA was purchased by Les Schwab of Enumclaw. The 4-H Grand Champion lamb owned by Sidney Stratton of Sumner, WA was sold to Coastal Farm & Ranch of Auburn.

A total of 131 hogs were sold, with a final average rate of $3.23 per pound. The FFA Grand Champion hog owned by Shannon Trepus of Sumner, WA was purchased by Les Schwab of Enumclaw; and Les Schwab of Gig Harbor purchased the 4-H Grand Champion hog owned by Alyssa McGee of Edgewood, WA.

The 2014 Spring Fair marks the 25th year the event has been held. Animals, the NW Jr. Livestock Show, free entertainment, kids’ activities, Northwest Living & Garden, Motorsport Mayhem and much more attract large crowds to this celebration of spring each April.
