Upon becoming eligible for Medicare coverage, people may be overwhelmed by the complexity of the system.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 25, a free workshop called “Introduction to Medicare” will provide an overview of the Medicare program and may alleviate some of the confusion.

The workshop, at The Villas at Union Park, 2010 S. Union Ave. in Tacoma, will explore the services provided by Medicare, including benefits, various supplemental insurance coverages that work with Medicare, and preventive services. Participants will also learn about Medicare’s coverage of long-term care, prescription drugs and more.

There is a question-and-answer period and resources and opportunities for individuals to address detailed concerns.

“There is an expectation that seniors will be very proficient with Medicare when they become eligible,” said Sally Nixon, manager of Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care. “The reality is much different. This program offers the chance for individuals to get to know Medicare in simple terms so that they will be better able to make the most out of their Medicare coverage as well as not expect too much from Medicare.”

The workshop is sponsored by the Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisers and the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center.
