Several hundred Pierce County residents who were summoned to jury duty got special attention this week.

The Pierce County Council joined Gov. Jay Inslee in proclaiming May 6-10 as “Juror Appreciation Week” to commend citizens for performing an important civic duty.

“The justice system cannot function without citizens willing to serve on jury duty,” said Superior Court Presiding Judge Ron Culpepper. “Judges and staff understand the sacrifice people make in order to serve. Jurors come from all walks of life. They are your friends, family and co-workers who are randomly selected weigh the evidence and deliver a verdict. Our jury system is a fundamental part of being an American, and we thank all who participate.”

In 2012, Pierce County summoned nearly 77,000 people to jury duty for Superior Court, District Court or Tacoma Municipal Court. Many are released from service once juries are selected for the cases at hand. Last year, 10,575 people served on cases.
