Kindergarten registration receives more emphasis

With the proposed move back to half-day classes and the option for a fee-based full day, kindergarten registration for the Enumclaw School District will receive more emphasis in April.

With the proposed move back to half-day classes and the option for a fee-based full day, kindergarten registration for the Enumclaw School District will receive more emphasis in April.

For the past six years, the Enumclaw School District has used Initiative 728 money to fund its full-day kindergarten program. This year, the state is expected to reduce the amount of I-728 money it gives to school districts. As a result, Enumclaw will no longer fund its full-day program.

However, the district is not abandoning full-day kindergarten, it’s just moving it to a tuition-based program with a $250 monthly fee for 10 months (September through June). A minimum of 20 students will be required to field a class. Superintendent Mike Nelson is predicting two full-day classes – one each at Sunrise and Westwood elementary schools. To field programs at the remaining three elementary schools, Nelson would need to have 20 students register for full-day at each of those schools.

Parents and guardians who are planning to enroll their child in the fee-based program need to alert the district prior to kindergarten orientation. For information contact Diana Aaby at 360-802-7102.

The district plans to notify parents whether full-day kindergarten numbers have been met by June 5.

Students in both the half- and full-day programs need to register during kindergarten orientation in April. The following is a schedule of times, days and locations:

• 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. April 7 at Kibler Elementary School, 360-802-7263.

• 6:30 p.m. April 23 at Southwood Elementary School, 360-802-7373.

• 6:30 p.m. April 23 at Sunrise Elementary School, 360-802-7425.

• 6:30 p.m. April 30 at Black Diamond Elementary School, 360-802-7573.

Children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31. A parent must present a child’s birth certificate at registration and provide immunization records and proof of residence.
