King County Council moves SoDo Arena Plan out of committee

Supporters come out in force for Hansen's arena proposal, County responds

The King County Council today moved legislation on Chris Hansen’s SoDo arena proposal out of the Budget and Fiscal Management Committee.  This move sets the stage for a floor vote by all nine Council members on Proposed Ordinance 2012-0202.

The King County Council announced a public hearing on the issue scheduled for 1:00 P.M. on Monday, July 30. Updated legislative proceeding details will be listed shortly at the King County Council website.

After nearly five months of deliberation, debate, analysis and strong public participation in determining the merits of Chris Hansen’s new SoDo arena proposal, the King County Council has responded to a massive outpouring of public support by taking this step on the proposal.  If the proposal passes the King County Council floor vote as many expect, passage of the arena proposal would then shift to the Seattle City Council, which appropriately carries the bulk of the fiscal obligation.

ArenaSolution.org president Brian Robinson has immediate media availability to discuss this progress in approving the arena proposal.  Robinson issued the following statement:

“This arena proposal continues to progress because the special interest groups lobbying against it have collectively failed to substantiate their claims of adverse impact.  The fans and the broader corporate community have shown tremendous support for the proposal and are encouraged that the King County Council took action to move this debate to a city level.  After months of debate, it is appropriate for them to turn their attention to other important King County issues.”

Last Thursday, more than 500 citizens packed Seattle City Hall over capacity to show support for Hansen’s arena proposal at a joint public hearing hosted by the Seattle City Council and King County Council.  Video of the joint public hearing is available on the Seattle Channel website.
