National Voter Registration Day is Sept. 23 this year. With voter registration deadlines for the November general election right around the corner, now’s a good time to be sure your voter registration is updated and to encourage eligible citizens to register to vote.

King County Elections has launched an Instagram campaign to encourage voter registration in a new, fun way. Voters can take a “selfie” with a sign saying “I’m registered to vote, are you?” Tag your photos #kceNVRD and @kcelections and your photo could be featured on our Instagram feed.

“While National Voter Registration Day can be fun, voting is serious business,” said Sherril Huff, Director of Elections at King County. “It’s an especially critical time to make your voice heard, given the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and voter suppression in parts of our country and throughout the world. I encourage citizens to exercise their rights to vote.”

Locally and in our state, there will be many important issues on the ballot this November, including education, transportation, and public safety. Voters will elect candidates to the state legislature and many key judicial positions. Nationally, there are many close Congressional races, the outcomes of which will help shape the direction of the country.

King County Elections has posters, web ads and other materials available on its web site to promote National Voter Registration Day. The Elections Department encourages organizations and individuals to help spread the word.

Voters already registered in Washington state have until Oct. 6 to update their addresses or change their name on their voter registration. Those not currently registered to vote in Washington may register in-person until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 27.
