Lahar warning sirens to be tested Oct. 5

A test of the Mount Rainier lahar warning sirens is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Sumner.

This is the first of Pierce County Emergency Management’s monthly tests of its outdoor warning sirens.

Drills will check the siren equipment and monitor sound coverage throughout the valley.

The sirens in Sumner are at Sumner/Alderton McAlder Elementary, 15502 96TH Street East; Sumner High School at 1707 Main Street and the Industrial District North at 24th St E and 142nd Ave E.

“The Department of Emergency Management will be running the test as a “full wail” of the sirens,” Carmen Palmer, Sumner Communications Director, stated.

A lahar test in the spring did not go as planned and the siren did not sound.

“The sirens did not go off in the spring test, so we can expect a very loud noise that people aren’t used to yet,” Palmer said.
