Man arrested for vehicle prowl blames it on “Billy” | SUMNER POLICE BLOTTER

THEFT?: On March 17, an officer responded to a medical facility for a report of a suspicious person who had entered and wandered the building. Staff deemed the man suspicious after he entered a laboratory and “made an employee feel uncomfortable.” However, police were called approximately 30 minutes after the man had already left the facility. An officer was called back to the facility when an employee was notified of purchases being made with her debit card. She checked her purse, which had been left unattended when she left a room to get away from the suspicious man, and found her wallet missing. Police later received a letter from the victim stating she found her wallet; it is unknown if it still contained her card and other property.

VEHICLE PROWL AND DUI: Shortly after midnight March 18, an officer was conducting speed enforcement on the 14300 block of 8th Street when he recognized a vehicle with its hood up. Thirty seconds later, the officer observed a man throw something into his own vehicle, which was parked near the open-hooded vehicle. The man closed the hood of the first vehicle, and drove off in his own car.

The officer pulled the man over on suspicion that he had just prowled a vehicle. The man stopped his vehicle in the lane of travel, and when the officer contacted the driver, he appeared “extremely nervous, shaking, and fail[ed] to make eye contact,” according to the officer’s description. The officer noticed   a car part sitting on the floorboard of the vehicle. The man told the officer that a friend, whom he called “Billy,” said he could stop by and take the part from the vehicle. The officer asked questions about Billy, and how he could contact him, information which the man could not provide.

During the exchange, the driver’s girlfriend called. The officer asked to speak to the caller to ask questions, before the man could give her instructions. The man ignored the instructions, talked to the caller about “Billy” and hung up. The officer ordered the man to call his girlfriend back, and eventually he did, with the officer taking the mobile to speak to the girlfriend. She said she hadn’t heard of any “Billy,” and that she believed her boyfriend was at the bar and should have been home by now. The driver was found to have a suspended driver’s license and admitted to drinking three beers. The driver was booked into Puyallup Jail on charges of DUI, driving while license suspended, vehicle prowl and theft in the third degree.

WALLET THEFT: On March 22, officers responded to   a call of a theft of a wallet from an employee by another employee in the 13500 blk. of 38th St E. Upon arrival the officers were advised that the video had been viewed and they know who took the wallet. The video confirmed that the victim dropped his wallet on the floor and the suspect picked it up and did not return it. Initially, the suspect was contacted by workplace administration and denied having the wallet. The suspect then advised that he did have the wallet for a while, but he threw it in the garbage. It wasn’t until people started looking in garbage cans that the suspect admitted to having the wallet on his person. The wallet was turned over to the victim and security; however there was no longer any money inside. While reviewing the video, the officer could see the victim put money into the wallet while sitting at the lunch table. The wallet must have fallen out of the victim’s pocket, landing on the floor which is where the video showed the suspect pick the victim’s wallet up from. The victim advised that the wallet had approximately $1600 in the wallet and that he was going to the bank after work to deposit the money. The suspect was arrested and later booked into Pierce County jail for Theft in the second degree.
