Marriage equality: AG Ferguson’s statement on Supreme Court decision

Today, Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. The court held same-sex marriage is legal nationwide. Attorney General Ferguson joined 15 other states in filing a "friend of the court" brief in the case, supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples.

Today, Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. The court held same-sex marriage is legal nationwide. Attorney General Ferguson joined 15 other states in filing a “friend of the court” brief in the case, supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples.

“Today, our nation’s highest court has taken an historic step by recognizing the basic human decency of marriage equality.

“I am proud that, as Attorney General, I was able to advocate for the position, as embodied in Washington state laws enacted by the people and their elected representatives, that prevailed today.

This nation was founded on the principle of equality for all, and today’s decision brings us closer toward realizing that ideal.”
